[Lattice] Finished up housevisits at Blk 105 this evening before heading off to Blk 604 to start on a new block to meet more members of the Eunos family! It was a pleasure to meet Mr Xiao at home and marvel at the lattice-block tiles (see first picture) that are embedded in the partition between the main door and dining room of his home. Such lattices were commonplace in many buildings before air-conditioners became ubiquitous. They served as important design features that allowed for better wind circulation to keep the rooms in buildings cool and well-ventilated. Mr Xiao’s lattice-block tiles have a long history. Mr Xiao recovered them from the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus school next to CHIJMES when it was demolished to make way for MRT HQ (now housing the ASEAN-Singapore Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence) decades ago. The tiles followed Mr Xiao wherever he moved, and they now serve a functional purpose in his home. Always a delight to speak to the Lazaroos, and to renew acquaintances with many residents including one of a four-legged variety - Benji! [Blk 105] Phew! What a super humid evening of housevisits today! Glad to have my Team Eunos housevisit volunteer team of Roy, Kang Hui and Adam with me, as we visited slightly more than half the households at block 105 (back soon for the rest of the households!). During the recent R&R exercise for Blk 101-121, instead of removing and replacing the old-school stone tables and stools that have stood at the void-deck for decades, the Aljunied-Hougang TC had them refurbished with a new pebble-wash finish, and a new polished granite table top. In addition to minimising wastage, the new look is both refreshing and also connects the estate to its past. The plan is to undertake a similar refurbishment of the old void-deck stone tables and stools for the upcoming R&R at Blk 601-618 as well. Feedback and views are always welcome!
