The Great Argus, a large species of pheasant known for its impressive plumage and courtship behaviour. Native to the jungles of Borneo, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia, it’s a peculiar, mysterious and elusive bird in this part of the world, almost like a ghost. They have a loud and distinctive vocalisation that echoes through the dense rainforest floor, serving to attract females and establish dominance. Habitat loss and being hunted for meat and it’s feathers evaluated the great argus as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List. Our national parks will never be or sound the same to me if this beautiful flightless bird bites the dust and bids farewell. Everything went sideways on this day. I woke up late, got stuck in a traffic, waited for my boatman’s bowel to clear, delayed fried noodle, took a diversion on the river to manage the tide and then, something sparkled on the water surface minutes after we embarked into the mangroves. Riman, my Bornean brother decided to take a closer look. It’s no twig as we suspected, but an Ophiophagus hannah. The afternoon light was harsh, and she decided to bank on the beach.
